Why a Car Is the Best Way to See the Altai
The Altai Republic is a vast and sparsely populated region. Distances between key points are measured in hundreds of kilometers, and public transport is infrequent and doesn't reach many areas. A car solves several problems at once: you set your own pace, easily reach remote locations, and can change plans on the go — linger at a waterfall or turn toward an unknown lake you spotted from the road.
The region's main artery is the Chuya Highway (federal road R-256). It is one of the most beautiful roads in the world, ranked by National Geographic among the top 10 most scenic highways on the planet. The asphalt surface is excellent — driving it is a pure pleasure. However, many side roads to natural attractions are gravel or dirt, requiring a vehicle with high ground clearance.
Chuya Highway: A Road Worth the Journey
The Chuya Highway starts in Novosibirsk and stretches to the Mongolian border. The most spectacular section runs from Gorno-Altaysk to the village of Tashanta (about 600 km). As you head south, the landscape changes before your eyes: green foothills give way to rocky canyons, followed by harsh highland steppes reminiscent of Mongolia and Tibet.
The road crosses the Seminsky Pass (1,717 m) and Chike-Taman Pass (1,295 m), with breathtaking panoramic views of the Katun River valley from the summit. Beyond Aktash, the highway enters the Chuya Valley — a completely different Altai: dry, rocky, with Martian landscapes and endless skies.
Key Attractions of Gorny Altai
Teletskoye Lake
One of the deepest lakes in Russia (up to 325 m) and a UNESCO site. Locals call it the 'Golden Lake' — Altyn-Köl. The water is so clear you can see the bottom at 12–14 m depth. By car, the easiest approach is to the northern shore via Artybash (~160 km from Gorno-Altaysk). The southern shore is only accessible by 4WD or by boat.
Karakol Lakes
Seven alpine lakes on the slopes of the Iolgo ridge (1,800–2,100 m). Each lake has its own hue — from deep blue to turquoise. The road is passable only in prepared 4WD vehicles; the last stretch is on foot or by local 'shishigas' (GAZ-66 trucks). The drive through the cedar forest alone is worth the trip.
Geyser Lake
A small thermal lake near Aktash. The bottom constantly 'paints' patterns with blue clay — turquoise water with emerald rings. It's a 10–15 minute walk along a wooden boardwalk from the roadside parking.
Martian Landscapes of Kyzyl-Chin
'Altai Mars' — hillsides in red, orange, yellow, and purple hues. An otherworldly sight, especially at sunset. 'Mars-1' is accessible via gravel road for any car. 'Mars-2' requires a 4WD or a hike.
Katu-Yaryk Pass and Chulyshman Valley
A steep switchback with an 800 m drop, leading into the Chulyshman River valley. The view from above is breathtaking: a green valley, a winding river, and the Karasu waterfall. The descent requires 4WD only. At the end of the valley is the southern shore of Teletskoye Lake, and along the way — the stone mushrooms of Akkurum.
Confluence of the Chuya and Katun Rivers
The murky white Chuya flows into the turquoise Katun — the two streams run parallel for a long stretch without mixing. The boundary is visible to the naked eye. The viewpoint is right by the Chuya Highway, near the village of Inya.
Aktru Glaciers
Base camp at 2,150 m elevation. The road from Kurai (~30 km) is serious off-road terrain for a prepared 4WD. Even without driving in, the view of the snow-white peaks of the North Chuya Range from the highway is impressive.
Patmos Island and Chemal
The closest resort area to Gorno-Altaysk. A suspension bridge to a rocky island with a temple, the Chemal hydroelectric dam, and a picturesque gorge. The road is fully paved — perfect for the first day.
Best Time to Visit the Altai
The optimal season is June through September. Each month has its own charm:
Rivers are full, meadows are covered with flowers, but lake water is still cold, and some mountain roads may still have snow.
Peak season. Warm weather, all roads are open, you can swim in the lakes. But popular routes are more crowded.
Golden autumn in the Altai is especially beautiful. Larches turn gold, the air is crystal clear, and there are far fewer tourists. Nights are cold, but days are comfortable.
